“I have a feeling that we are close to the final negotiation of a security partnership,” said Chancellor Olaf Solz
A security agreement between Berlin and Kyiv, Chancellor Olaf Solz expects it to be concluded soon, while he also believes that the European Union member states will commit next week to a package of financial assistance of 50 billion euros to Ukraine.
“I have a feeling that we are close to the final negotiation of a security partnership,” said Mr. Soltz after the meeting he had yesterday, Wednesday, evening with the Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico.
At the same time, the German chancellor appealed to European partners to provide more military aid to Ukraine. “Our joint message to Russia should be that we will support Ukraine, which is fighting for its existence and to maintain its sovereignty, for as long as it takes. The EU and NATO member states must join forces now.”
According to information from Handelsblatt, the German government is considering possible ways to solve the problem with the delivery of rockets “Taurus“, with the system of circular exchange.
Germany will deliver missiles from its armed forces stockpile to Britain and in France for these countries to then deliver corresponding systems to Ukraine.
The same sources even state that the British government is willing to offer Ukraine more missiles than it will receive from Germany.
Robert Fitzow, for his part, confirmed that the repair hub for German weapons used in Ukraine will continue to operate in Slovakia, while he agreed with Mr. Soltz on the need for the EU to decide soon on further financial aid to Kiev. He even stated that he is convinced that a relevant agreement will be reached at the extraordinary session on February 1.
The Slovak prime minister, however, rejected the accusation that his country does not provide sufficient support to Ukraine. “We support both EU financial aid and commitment to accession talks with Kiev, even though Ukraine has not yet made much progress with its reforms (…) The country must meet all the accession criteria. An unprepared country can cause more problems than benefits for the EU,” said Mr Fičo, clarifying that, as a neighbor of Ukraine, Slovakia “sees some things differently”.
Slovakia’s prime minister recently said he does not agree to Ukraine joining NATO or giving it more military aid, as, he said, “it is not an independent and sovereign country, but completely under the influence and control of the US.” During the press conference with Olaf Solz, he also emphasized that he does not believe that the conflict with Russia can be solved by military means, but also that he does not expect any significant change within 2024. “The only answer was war. I don’t know what will change, there will only be more deaths,” he concluded.
