The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, today signed the protocol of Sweden’s accession to NATO, after the ratification of the relevant bill by the National Assembly, last Tuesday night.

As reported by the Turkish news agency Anadolu, the law approving the ratification of Sweden’s accession protocol to NATO was published in the Turkish Government Gazette and entered into force.

After the signing, the last obstacle from Ankara’s side for Sweden’s accession to NATO is removed. It is recalled that Sweden submitted an application to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in May 2022 after the outbreak of war in Ukraine in February of the same year, but the accession process, which requires the approval of all members, was delayed by Turkey and Hungary.

It is recalled that last Tuesday the protocol was approved by the Turkish National Assembly.

Thus, Hungary is now Sweden’s last obstacle to joining the alliance.
