The US military said the attack took place at a base in northeastern Jordan, near the border with Syria.
The attack that killed three American soldiers did not take place on Jordanian soil but possibly at a military base in Syria, a Jordanian government spokesman said today.
“The attack that targeted US forces was not in Jordan. It targeted the al-Tanf base in Syria,” a strategic anti-jihadist coalition base near the Jordanian-Iraqi border, said Muhannad al-Bubaidin, the who is also the Minister of Communications, speaking on Jordanian state television.
The US military announced that the attack took place on a base in northeastern Jordan, near the border with Syria. He did not name the base.
US military activity in Jordan is a sensitive issue, especially at a time of heightened tension due to the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
The Jordanian government spokesman said the militants targeted another base outside Jordanian territory.
Washington has given Jordan nearly $1 billion to bolster border security since Syria’s civil war broke out in 2011, and has recently sent more military aid to that end, according to Western intelligence sources.
It is unclear which Iranian-backed group may have carried out the attack. However, several US officials say they do not believe Iranian military forces launched the one-way attack drone themselves.
