THE Italian Ilaria Salisaged thirty-nine, is being tried in Hungary with the accusation that a year ago, during a demonstration, he attacked two far-right activists who, as it turns out, did not file a lawsuit.

The trial began today and the images of the Italian prisoner, who she was brought into the courtroom handcuffed, with a chain. “She was being dragged around like a dog, it was terrible. And the whole thing lasted more than three hours,” said her lawyer.

Sallis proclaims her innocence and her family has complained that she is being held in Budapest in inhumane conditions. Thousands of citizens have already signed an online petition demanding her immediate release.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, in a post on X, asked the Hungarian government “to carry out the necessary controls and to intervene so that the rights – as provided by the rules of the European Union – of the Italian citizen Ilaria Sallis are respected”.

The trial is expected to continue on May 24.
