“Missiles have been fired at US and coalition forces at the Sanadi base” in northeastern Syria, a senior US Defense Department official said.
US and international anti-jihadist coalition troops were targeted in a new missile attack on Monday, a senior Pentagon official said, a day after three US service members were killed in a drone attack on a support base on the Jordan/Syria border.
“Missiles have been fired at US and coalition forces at the Sanadi base,” in northeastern Syria, said the senior US Defense Department official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
“No injuries were reported, and no infrastructure damage was reported,” he added.
Washington maintains around 900 troops deployed in Syria and another nearly 2,500 in Iraq as part of the operation against the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group by an international coalition it established in 2014.
US forces have been facing a wave of attacks since mid-October, most of which have been claimed by a front group made up of paramilitary groups close to Iran. The group says it is attacking in retaliation for US support for Israel in its war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
US and coalition forces have been targeted in at least 165 attacks since mid-October, 66 in Iraq, 98 in Syria and one in Jordan, with rockets, drones, mortars and short-range ballistic missiles, according to Pentagon official.
The attack yesterday Sunday targeted “Tower 22”, a support base for the American army on Jordanian territory, on the border with Syria and about ten kilometers from the border with Iraq. The three soldiers killed were the first US casualties since the Israel/Hamas war broke out on October 7.
The US casualties further heightened fears of a flare-up in the region as fighting continues to rage in the Gaza Strip, which Israel is besieging and battering.
The White House announced again yesterday that there will be US retaliation for the attack.
