THE army of israel announced today that during the night it struck Syrian military infrastructure in Deraa province, responding to fire fired from the neighboring country.

“Last night a number of attacks from Syria were detected against the southern part of the Golan Heights. In response, defense forces aircraft hit military infrastructure belonging to the Syrian regime in Deraa province,” he said in a statement.

The Israeli military did not report any casualties or damage in the Golan, a territory Israel has annexed.

Israel rarely comments on its operations against Syria, but has indicated it wants to prevent Iran, which backs the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, from gaining a presence near its borders.

Since the start of the war in Syria in 2011, Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes on Syrian soil, targeting positions of the Syrian army and pro-Iranian armed groups such as Lebanon’s Hezbollah.

Yesterday, Monday, eight people, including pro-Iranian fighters, were killed in an Israeli strike south of Damascus, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Besides, the Israeli army pointed out that it carried out artillery strikes against several areas in southern Lebanon today, without giving any other details.

Since the unprecedented attack by Hamas against Israel on October 7, the exchange of fire on the border between Israel and Lebanon is almost daily between the Israeli army and the Lebanese Hezbollah.

More than 200 people have been killed in Lebanon since the outbreak of war, including at least 147 Hezbollah fighters, according to an AFP count. On the Israeli side, 15 people have been killed, among them nine soldiers and six civilians, the Israeli army has announced.
