At least two people were killed and three hundred injured when it erupted huge fire due to gas explosion tthe night of Thursday to Friday in Nairobi, the Kenyan Red Cross announced today.

A truck carrying natural gas exploded in the Embakashi district around 11:30 p.m. (20:30 GMT), “creating a huge ball of fire,” a government spokesman said.

Thanks to “coordinated actions of various intervention units” it was possible to “evacuate 271 people urgently and take them to various health centers in Nairobi”, the Kenyan capital, the Red Cross said via X (the former Twitter), adding that first aid was provided to another 27 people on site.

Homes, businesses and cars were damaged from the huge fire.

Government spokesman Isaac Muaura said the blast site had now been cordoned off and a command center had been set up to help coordinate rescue operations.

The fire has reportedly spread to several apartment complexes, prompting fears that the death toll could rise further.

Witnesses told local media that they felt tremors immediately after the explosion.
