Germany’s foreign minister is warning Israel against conducting a ground military operation in Rafah, on the southern tip of the Gaza Strip, in statements published today.

The attack on Rafah, a city that hosts more than a million displaced people from other areas of the Palestinian enclave, is “simply not justified”, emphasizes Annalena Berbock (Greens) in her statements published today by the RND (Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland) group.

The German foreign minister also underlines that “the majority of the victims are women and children” in the war in the Gaza Strip, adding: “Let’s imagine it for a moment: What if they were our children?”

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallad said earlier this week that his forces in the next phase of the ground operation will operate in the area where Rafah is located, according to the Times of Israel newspaper.

Last Thursday night, the defense minister said the Israeli armed forces would target Hamas fighters in Rafah and advance their crushing, which he said has been happening for the past few weeks in Khan Yunis, the largest city in the south. of the Palestinian enclave.

Mrs Burbock says she was shocked when she heard about the plan.

“Together with our American partners, I have repeatedly told the Israeli government that the population of the Gaza Strip cannot be wiped out,” he emphasizes.

According to the UN, over 1.3 million Palestinians, or more than half the population of the Gaza Strip (2.2 million), have taken refuge in and around Rafah to escape the shelling and fighting. Before the war, the city, on the border with Egypt, had around 250,000 inhabitants.

The American newspaper Wall Street Journal reported three weeks ago, citing its Israeli and Egyptian sources, that Cairo was informed that an Israeli military operation was planned on the Palestinian side of the border.

The key border crossing at Rafah is controlled by Egyptian authorities and Palestinians working for Hamas.

Israel’s civil-military leadership says underground tunnels that cut across the border are being used to smuggle goods and weapons to Hamas.
