Yesterday, Friday, the US armed forces launched airstrikes at Iraq and the Syria against more than 85 targets linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and the militias they support, in retaliation for last weekend’s drone strike in northeastern Jordan that killed three American soldiers.

The US strikes left at least “16 dead, including civilians”, according to an official tally released today by government spokesman Bassem al-Awadi.

With these strikes, “the security of Iraq and the region are on the brink of the abyss,” the statement of the government spokesman underlines, in which “false allegations” regarding alleged “previous coordination” with Washington on these strikes are also denied.

An initial count, given to AFP by two sources in the security forces, put 18 dead, including 15 members of armed groups and three civilians.
