National tragedy in Chile… At least 64 people died in the forest fires sweeping the Valparaiso region in the center of the country, the country’s president Gabriel Boric announced today, clarifying that the new toll is expected to “increase significantly”.

“Unfortunately I can confirm that there are 64 dead. This number will increase, we know it will increase significantly,” Boric said in a televised address to the nation from the town of Quilpué, on the outskirts of Viña del Mar, neighborhoods of which were charred.

In Quilpué, almost 90 km northwest of Santiago, an AFP team he was able to see entire neighborhoods and cars charred. There, thousands of residents were stranded for several hours on Friday as they tried to escape by car.

“This is the greatest tragedy that we are experiencing after the 2010 earthquake,” Boric said, referring to the 8.8-magnitude earthquake followed by a tsunami on February 27, 2010, which left more than 500 dead and many devastations.
