The Israeli military announced today that it has laid siege to Khan Younis, in the southern Gaza Strip, a compound used by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas to prepare the October 7 attack.

“The ‘Al-Qandiya’ compound served as a Hamas training center for terrorists,” the army said in a statement, mainly describing mock-ups of entrances to kibbutzim, military bases and Israeli armored vehicles.

The soldiers also entered the office of Mohammed Sinwar, one of the commanders of Hamas’ armed wing, the al-Qassam Brigades. He is the brother of Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas in Gaza, who is believed to be the mastermind of the October 7 attack.

The soldiers also found in the same area a weapons manufacturing workshop and tunnel infrastructure, many weapons, mainly anti-tank missiles, anti-tank rocket launchers, light machine guns, explosives, grenades and other ammunition.

The war erupted after Hamas’ unprecedented attack on Israeli soil killed more than 1,160 people, most of them civilians killed on the same day, according to an AFP tally based on official figures.

Israel has vowed to “exterminate” Hamas and launched a military operation that has killed 27,365 Palestinians, the vast majority of them women and children, according to a latest tally announced today by Hamas’ health ministry.

Nearly 250 people were kidnapped on October 7, according to Israel, and 132 hostages are still being held in Gaza. Among them, 27 were declared dead by the army.
