The US military announced in the early hours of this morning that it destroyed five cruise missiles of Yemen’s Houthi rebels on Sunday, including four anti-surface missiles that were “ready to launch” in the direction of the Red Sea.

Yesterday “around 05:30 Sana’a time (04:30 Greek time)” the US military conducted a “legitimate defense strike against a surface-to-surface cruise missile”, and “from 10:30 (09:30 ) hit four anti-surface cruise missiles, all of which were ready to launch against ships in the Red Sea,” the US Joint Chiefs of Staff for the Middle East (CENTCOM) said via X (formerly Twitter). “central Command”).

The strikes came a few hours after the bombings carried out jointly by the US and Britain against dozens of “targets”, positions and installations of the Houthi rebels in Yemen, from Saturday night to Sunday.

The Houthis, who have been fighting the internationally recognized government since 2014, control most of northern Yemen, the poorest country on the Arabian Peninsula. Since mid-November, they have launched over thirty attacks against merchant ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, and have repeatedly fired missiles at Israel, which were intercepted.

They say they are carrying out these attacks as a sign of “solidarity” with the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, where the war between the Israeli army and Hamas has been raging since October 7.
