At least 10 police officers were killed in an attack by dozens of gunmen on their station in northwestern Pakistan, a senior officer said today. The attack targeted the Chodwan police station in Dera Ismail Khan district.

“More than 30 terrorists launched an attack from three directions” and the “firefight” lasted “over two and a half hours,” Akhtar Hayat Gadapur, head of the Pakistani police in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, told AFP.

Pakistan has been facing a resurgence of Islamist extremist violence, especially attacks against security forces, since 2022, when a ceasefire agreement between the authorities and the Pakistani Taliban (TPM) collapsed.

Today’s attack began at 03:00 (local time; midnight Greek time). The attackers initially targeted guards with sniper fire before launching a rampage, using grenades and other weapons. The attack came less than 24 hours before elections were to be held in Pakistan later this week.
