85% of the population has been driven from their homes, with hundreds of thousands living crammed into makeshift tent camps
Israel’s evacuation orders cover two-thirds of the territory in the Gaza Strip, or 246 square kilometers (95 square miles), United Nations humanitarian monitors said Tuesday.
More than half of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million people are now crammed into the town of Rafah on the border with Egypt and surrounding areas, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said.
The health ministry in Gaza said the Palestinian death toll stood at 27,478 after nearly four months of war. A quarter of the people of Gaza now is starving and 85% of the population has been driven from their homeswith hundreds of thousands living crammed into makeshift tent camps.
On the diplomatic front, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman shortly after arriving in the country on Monday. It is Blinken’s fifth visit to the Middle East since the Gaza war broke out on October 7, when Hamas invaded southern Israel.
