Sophie Grégoire Trudeau was in a relationship with a pediatric surgeon for several months before her split from him was announced Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau.

The now-ex-couple revealed on August 2, 2023 that they had separated after 18 years of marriage and three children. The reasons for their separation were not made known, however the couple stated at the time that the breakup came after “many and difficult conversations”.

However, it has since been reported by Canadian media, including “The National Post”that when their decision to separate was announced, Sophie had already begun a relationship with pediatric surgeon Dr. Marcos Bettolli, based in Ottawa.

In a divorce petition filed on April 26, 2023, the doctor’s ex-wife, Ana Remonda, claimed that the pediatric surgeon had a relationship with a person “high profilewhich attracts significant media attention and presents significant security issues.”

The person is not named in court documentsbut the National Post reported that Ana Remonda’s claim that she is Justin Trudeau’s ex-wife has been confirmed.

Dr. Marcos Bettolli, 48, works at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) and also teaches at the University of Ottawa’s medical school.

He completed his medical studies at the Catholic University of Córdoba, Argentina, according to his resume on the University of Ottawa website.

The doctor moved to Canada in 2004 before becoming head of the undergraduate pediatric surgery program at the university in 2010. In 2014, he was promoted to associate professor and earned his fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC).

His ex-wife, who is not working, reportedly stated in her divorce filing that she takes no position on her ex-partner’s personal life.

However, he insisted that the new relationship resulted in security concerns, “regarding the exposure of the children while in their father’s care” and sought an injunction “to ensure the privacy and protection of their two children.” But Dr Bettolli reportedly insisted that his ex-wife’s attitude towards his relationship with Sophie “is not in the best interests of the children”.

He reportedly claimed his ex-wife threatened to return to Argentina, where they were both born, if the new relationship was revealed. The couple separated in January 2020 after 22 years of marriage.

The National Post report in October made it clear that none of the allegations in the divorce petition have been proven in court and that the case is ongoing.
