Clashes broke out in Madrid on Saturday when police clashed with farmers and truck drivers who tried to block a main thoroughfare in the Spanish capital.
Delegations of trade unions representing truck drivers and farmers gathered in a car park near Atletico Madrid’s stadium, wearing yellow vests, waving Spanish flags and chanting “Long live Spain”. Protesting environmental regulations, bureaucracy and high taxation, they voted to coordinate their mobilizations and henceforth join forces.
After the voting ended, hundreds of protesters tried to block a main highway, but a strong police force pushed them back violently. Later, about 200 protesters gathered near the headquarters of the ruling Socialist Party, around which police had set up a security cordon.
“The government is forcing us to take measures” that will lead to problems supplying the market, said Manuel Hernandez, a spokesman for the truck drivers.
Since Tuesday, Spanish farmers – following the example of their colleagues in Germany, France, Italy, Portugal and Belgium – have launched daily protest movements, which include blockades of roads and ports.
