Thousands of people demonstrated yesterday Saturday in Israel demanding the release of hostages held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip, while some demanded the resignation of the Netanyahu government.

Relatives of hostages have accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of torpedoing negotiations to reach a deal that could bring the hostages back “as soon as tomorrow,” the mother of a young Israeli being held captive in the Gaza Strip said in a speech.

At a rally held in Tel Aviv, many demonstrators called for the resignation of the government and the calling of elections. Hundreds of protesters blocked the city’s main streets and at least seven were arrested by police.

Demonstrations for the release of the hostages were also held in Jerusalem and Haifa 127 days after the start of the war, which was sparked by an unprecedented attack by Hamas that killed around 1,200 people.

Israel responded by pounding the Gaza Strip from the air, followed by ground operations. More than 28,000 Palestinians have been killed during Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip, according to a health ministry tally in the Hamas-controlled Palestinian enclave.

During a brief truce in November, 105 hostages were released in exchange for 240 Palestinians held in Israeli prisons. Since then, however, no glimmers of hope have emerged for the families of the remaining hostages, who are anxious for the fate of their loved ones. Israeli authorities estimate that at least 30 of the remaining 136 abductees are dead.
