France, expressing concern following Israeli strikes on Rafah (southern Gaza Strip), today urged Israel to end hostilities to avoid “a catastrophe”.

“A large-scale Israeli attack on Rafah would create a catastrophic humanitarian situation of a new dimension and unjustified,” said France’s deputy foreign ministry spokesman Christophe Lemoine.

“In order to avoid a catastrophe, we reiterate our call for a cessation of hostilities,” he said in a written statement.

Paris recalls that “Rafa is today an area where more than 1.3 million people have taken refuge”.

“It is also a vital transit point for the transfer of humanitarian aid for the population of Gaza,” the French Foreign Ministry spokesman underlines.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisted today on his will to launch a military offensive against Rafah. He assured that the population would benefit from a “safe passage” to leave there.

“In Gaza, as everywhere else, France opposes any forced displacement of populations, which is prohibited by international humanitarian law,” commented Christophe Lemoine.

“The future of the Gaza Strip and its inhabitants can only be written within a Palestinian State where they will live in peace and security alongside Israel,” the French official underlined.
