“Greece is ahead of us in terms of citizens’ rights. Italy will be the only country without equal marriage for same-sex couples”, headlines an article in the Italian weekly magazine L’Espresso.

On the occasion of the law on equality in civil marriage, which is expected to be approved today by the Greek parliament, the well-known Italian magazine, which is addressed to the wider area of the center-left, underlines:

“Greece, despite having a conservative government, in recent years has proven to be able to approve important reforms in favor of the LGBTI+ community, such as the abolition of the rule that prohibited homosexuals from being blood donors, but also the abolition of surgeries for the so-called normalization gender of the children. With the approval of the law on the right of same-sex couples to marry, Italy – which in the meantime restricts the rights of Rainbow families – will be the only country in western Europe not to grant the right to civil marriage, along with states that once belonged to the Soviet Union and some small countries, such as ‘San Marino and the Vatican’.

L’Espresso adds that Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis called the law passed today “a step that leads to greater social justice” and underlines that the Greek LGBTI+ community would also like surrogacy to be allowed, while the Orthodox Church has declared against in the approval of this law.
