Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke of positive developments in the relations between the United States and Turkey, stressing that the number of issues on which the two countries agree or have a common understanding is increasing.

Speaking to reporters on the flight back from Egypt, where he paid an official visit, the Turkish president said: “We can talk about some positive developments between us and the US as a result of these recent steps we have taken. Currently, the mood in Congress is positive. Likewise, positive voices are coming from the Senate. We can say that the number of issues on which we think the same way or agree with the US is increasing. There is no negative course at the moment, on the contrary, there are positive developments.”

According to Erdogan, the relevant US ministers also convey to their counterparts in Turkey that there are positive developments.

“They told us that ‘we are doing our best. You have seen Mr. Biden’s letter with his signature’ and we told them: ‘you have also seen our approval document (s.s. for Sweden joining the NATO) signed. Above all, you saw the decision of our Parliament and thanked us one after the other. And we are waiting for you now from now on,” said Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Finally, the Turkish president mentioned that the Swedish prime minister called him and thanked him for approving his country’s accession to the North Atlantic Alliance, “a fact that is an indication that the step we have taken is in a positive direction.”
