As of 2022, Breivik is being held in the Ringerike maximum security prison on the shores of the lake where the island of Utoja is located, where he killed 69 people on July 22, 2011 – before his bombing in Oslo, which killed eight people
It was rejected recourse of Anders Behring Breivik against the Norwegian state, in which the serial killer complained of “inhumane treatment” in yet another attempt to end his solitary confinement in prison.
Breivik sued the Norwegian state for violating human rights, an argument rejected by an Oslo court today. The far-right killer is serving a 21-year prison sentence, which can be extended as long as Breivik is deemed to represent a threat to public safety.
As of 2022, Breivik is being held in Ringerike maximum security prison on the shores of the lake where the island of Utoja is located, where he killed 69 people on July 22, 2011. This was preceded by his bomb attack in Oslo, which killed eight people.
Although Breivik tearfully stated in his testimony that solitary confinement is a “nightmare” and that he thinks about suicide every day, the conditions of detention described during the trial would be the envy of prisoners around the world.
The director of the prison emphasized that Breivik has much more space than any other prisoner in the penitentiary. In particular, he has three rooms at his disposal – a living area, a study area and an exercise area – upstairs. Downstairs he has at his disposal a kitchen, a TV room with an Xbox console, a dining room and a visiting area, which he shares – not at the same time – with another prisoner.
