Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez has been arrested

by

Police officers today held the former President of Honduras Juan Orlando Ernantas and railed rail from his residence to Technolaka, after a arrest warrant was issued against him and is pending the request for his publication in the US with the drug trafficking.

In the images broadcast on Honduran public television, police officers appear to have Hernandez put on a bulletproof vest and then handcuffed him before taking him to a special forces base. Hernandez is then seen in a room undergoing medical examinations.

The former president of Honduras remained in his house, around which strong police forces had developed since yesterday Monday. Early Tuesday morning, he wrote in a Twitter post that he had informed the police that he was “ready to cooperate”.

Juan Orlando Hernandez stepped down on January 27, after two terms in the presidency.

His younger brother, Juan Antonio “Tony” Hernandez, was sentenced in March 2021 by a US court to life in prison for drug trafficking. New York prosecutors believe the former president was an accomplice.

Another person close to former head of state Giovanni Fuentes Ramirez was also sentenced last week to life in prison for drug trafficking by a Manhattan federal court in New York.

Juan Orlando Hernandez denies the charges against him, citing attempts by drug traffickers to seek “revenge” because in his day law enforcement had dealt a major blow to them.

In Honduras, he is accused by his political opponents of corruption in awarding government contracts for public works but also in procurement to deal with the pandemic.
