Two different rescue operations by the NGO Geo Barents
More than 80 migrants have been rescued, but two have died and three others are missing after two sea rescue operations off the coast of Libya, the Doctors Without Borders.
The NGO ship Geo Barents picked up more than 60 people late last night from a plastic dinghy that had raised a distress signal in international waters off its coast Libya. It also recovered one dead person, while one of the migrants taken aboard died shortly after being rescued.
Another 19 people were picked up from an abandoned oil platform off the coast of of Tunisia, according to Doctors Without Borders. The migrants told rescuers that they swam there after the boat they were on began to sink.
Three people who remained on the boat are now missing, the non-governmental organization added.
“All survivors are recovering and receiving care at Geo Barents after these traumatic ordeals,” MSF said, adding that they had asked for permission to disembark them “at the nearest safe place”.
