Ukraine’s military is currently in an “extremely difficult” situation against Russian forces, which are attacking eastern and southern Ukraine after capturing the town of Avdiivka over the weekend, Kiev admitted on Monday.

“The situation is extremely difficult in parts of the front line where Russian troops have gathered the maximum reserves. They are benefiting from the delay in aid” from the West to Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky said yesterday in his daily message.

He added that his country lacks artillery and is equally in need of anti-aircraft defense and longer-range weapons, while he also said that the blockade of the border with Poland by Polish truck drivers and farmers demonstrates “the erosion of solidarity” towards the country of.

On the battlefield, Russian troops, who made their biggest territorial gains since the capture of Bakhmut in May 2023 by capturing Avdiyivka, in the eastern Donetsk region, have moved on to the offensive in the eastern and southern regions of Ukraine. , the Ukrainian armed forces explained.

In the southern part of the front, “the enemy made 10 fruitless attempts against the positions of the (Ukrainian) defense forces in the vicinity of (the village of) Robotine. Here the situation is volatile, the enemy is constantly firing,” said Dmytro Likhovi, the representative of the Ukrainian armed forces in this zone.

According to him, the Ukrainians repelled attacks launched “with a significant number of armored vehicles”, but the Russians are now attacking “with small groups” supported by armor and the air force, which is “operating intensively”.

“These offensive actions have been stopped, the enemy has been eliminated from the Robotine region,” assured General Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, the commander of Ukrainian troops in the region.

The DeepState channel on the Telegram platform, which is close to the Ukrainian army, had broadcast on Sunday evening that the Russians had managed to break through the Ukrainian defenses a few kilometers east of Robotine.

This village, which, like numerous other settlements, has been completely leveled by artillery, was retaken by the Russians in August, in what was described as a major success for Ukraine in the counter-offensive launched in the summer.

The Russian offensive on this part of the southern front began at the weekend, as the Russian army captured Avdiivka, about 150 kilometers northeast of Robotine, after four months of repeated attacks.

In the Donetsk region, the Russian army “improved” its positions. In particular, “he completely liberated the Avdiivka coal mine, the last sector held by the Ukrainians before their withdrawal, it was officially announced yesterday, Monday, from Moscow.

In the Avdiivka zone, “the Russians are regrouping, they have achieved their tactical objectives” and “they will probably transfer units (from Avdiivka) to other areas,” stressed Ukrainian representative Dmytro Likhovy.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had spoken of a “significant victory” after the capture of Avdiivka, days before the second anniversary of the start of the Russian invasion on February 24.
