Demonstrators threw Molotov cocktails, stones and smoke bombs in the direction of the government building, which is guarded by a large police cordon, without causing injuries or significant damage
Thousands of right-wing opposition activists demonstrated on Tuesday night in front of the Albanian government headquarters in Tirana demanding the resignation of the socialist prime minister Eddie Ramawhom they accuse of “corruption”, according to ERT citing France Presse.
The gathering of these activists, especially the Democratic Party (PD), whose the leader Sali Berisha is under house arrest, it lasted more than two hours while the head of the government is on an official visit to Turkey.
Just before the end, protesters threw Molotov cocktails, stones and smoke bombs in the direction of the government buildingguarded by a large police cordon, without causing any injuries or significant damage.
“Through this meeting we want to show Edi Rama that the opposition is united” with the aim of “toppling him», said MP Flamur Noka, and General Secretary of the Democratic Party.
THE Eddie Rama59, has been prime minister since 2013.
This demonstration was organized on the day of the 33rd anniversary of the fall of the communist regime in 1991.
Demonstrators waved Albanian and European Union flags and placards reading “Rama, leave” and “Opposition in action, today or never”.
The PD’s iconic leader, Sali Berisha, addressed the protesters via live link from his home.
“Today we started our fight without retreat to overthrow the dictatorship of Edi Rama which is a real danger,” he said, accusing the head of government of “corruption” and a “political attack” against his family.
Former prime minister and the country’s first democratically elected president, Berisha, 79, was placed under house arrest on December 30 for refusing to appear in court on corruption charges.
About ten days earlier, parliamentary immunity had been lifted.
Despite these restrictions, he continues to address his supporters regularly from his apartment window.
Berisha is suspected by prosecutors of “passive corruption” in an investigation into the privatization of a sports complex in 2008 for the benefit of his son-in-law, when he was head of government. He rejected these charges, calling them “purely political” and accused Edi Rama of being their “instigator”.
Sali Berisha is subject to an entry ban from the United States and Great Britain from 2022 due to his alleged involvement in corruption, charges he has denied.
