Russia does not have sufficient domestic production of munitions to meet the needs of the war in Ukraine, they said today Western officials spoke on condition of anonymity.

Russia’s defense industry grapples with impact of sanctions, the officials said, adding that the country’s inability to access Western components undermines its ability to produce new systems and repair old ones.

“Russia’s domestic munitions production capabilities are temporarily ineffective to meet the needs of the war in Ukraine,” Western officials said.

“Sanctions are hitting the Russian military-industrial complex hardcausing serious delays and increased costs.”

The briefing by Western officials on the situation comes as the war in Ukraine enters its third year, with Vladimir Putin on the rise after taking control of the Ukrainian city of Avdiivka and amid warnings that Ukraine is running out of ammunition.
