At least two people were killed and two others injured in the eastern Netherlands today when part of a bridge under construction collapsed, local authorities said.

“A labor accident occurred during the construction of a bridge. Unfortunately, two people were killed and two others were injured.”the rescue service reported to platform X.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the causes of the accident which was noted in one Lochem Canal.

A reporter from the local newspaper De Stentor, who was present at the scene, said that workers were raising the arches of the bridge when the structure collapsed. “Suddenly, there was a huge noise. The entire arc began to pulsate. Then, it fell. We saw two workers fall”he said.

According the Dutch Labor Inspectorate, cited by the ANP agency, parts of the bridge fell on two people.

In footage released by Dutch media, helicopters can be seen flying over the scene and ambulances arriving in the area.

Many workers who witnessed the accident are receiving psychological support.

Many residents had also gathered in the area to see the progress of the work and saw the accident, since it had been announced that the assembly of the bridge would begin today. Some went specifically to witness the final phase of the project.
