Turkey’s current permanent representative to the United Nations, Sedat Onal, takes over as his country’s ambassador to Washington.

Turkey’s current deputy foreign minister, Ahmet Yildiz, has been appointed to his position as head of Turkey’s Permanent Mission to the UN, according to diplomatic sources from the Turkish Foreign Ministry.

The 61-year-old new ambassador of Turkey to the US has served as a diplomat in the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1989 and has worked in many countries including Kuwait, Germany, the US, Iran, Austria and Jordan. He had assumed the duties of Turkey’s permanent representative to the United Nations last year in February.

The position of Turkey’s ambassador in Washington has been vacant since January 12, when Hasan Murat Mercan resigned. Officially, the reason was the completion of the age limit. Hasan Murat Merjan was not a career diplomat, but was appointed by political decision. He is an engineer, politician and founding member of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP). Before Washington he had served as ambassador in Tokyo.
