Marine Le Pen, who was already in dire straits over her candidacy for the French presidency following a series of departuressuffered another blow as its far-right party ousted its pro-election campaign spokesman on charges of political espionage.
In a statement sent to senior party officials, National Alarm claims that Nicolas Bee, once a Lepen confidant and former party secretary general, provided “strategic and confidential” campaign information to the far-right opponent. Eric Zemour.
“This completely immoral behavior constitutes sabotage,” the party said in a statement, which was later circulated in the media.
“This duplicity is unworthy of the trust shown to it by the candidate, party members and voters,” it said.
Zemour, a television star who systematically violates the boundaries of political correctness with his nationalist rhetoric, is competing with Le Pen for votes in the camp of the far right and the ardent conservatives.
Polls suggest Zemour has drawn from both Le Pen and mainstream conservative candidate Valerie Pecres.
Be, who is an MEP, described the accusations as outrageous.
“How could I possess and hand over so-called ‘strategic information’ without ever being a member of the campaign leadership?” Be wrote on Twitter.
According to him, he was deleted from the National Alarm one hour after the meeting of the party’s executive committee following his request to discuss the “crisis” that the party is facing against Zemour.
In recent weeks, Le Pen, who is running for president for the third time, has seen her sole senator and senior MEP – among others – change camp and join Zemour. In addition, her niece, Marion Marshall, a popular figure among far-right supporters, has also named Zemour the best candidate.
Zemour appears in the polls face to face with Pekres and the gap seems to be closing against Lepen for the second round of elections, in April.
President Emanuel Macron, who has not yet officially announced his candidacy, remains first in the ballot.
