According to diplomats, Rutte is currently the only official candidate for the position
US President Joe Biden supports Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte as the next head of NATO, a US official told Reuters today.
“President Biden explicitly supports Prime Minister Rutte’s nomination to be the next NATO secretary general,” the US official said.
Rutte, who is considered a favorite on the succession of Jens Stoltenberg as NATO Secretary General, he had expressed his interest in the position last year.
Earlier today the British Foreign Office also announced its support for Rutte’s candidacy to head NATO.
THE Mark Ruttewho he is the longest-serving prime minister in the Netherlandshad unexpectedly announced in July that he was leaving Dutch politics, but is staying on as caretaker prime minister while negotiations continue to form a coalition government after the Nov. 22 election.
According to diplomats, Rutte is currently the only official candidate for the post.
