Western nations should be bolder in seizing Russian assets frozen after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began in 2022, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said.

In an article in the Sunday Times newspaper, on the occasion of the completion of two years since the start of the war, the British Prime Minister emphasizes that Ukraine needs more long-range weapons, drones, ammunition, as well as other help.

“We need to be bolder about seizing hundreds of billions in frozen Russian assets,” Sunak says in the article.

Last month, British Investments Minister Dominic Johnson discussed the issue with US Treasury Secretary Wally Antegemo, stressing that everything must be done in accordance with international law.

In 2022 the European Union, the US, Japan and Canada froze about $300 billion worth of Russian central bank assets.

The G7 is considering seizing Russian assets to make Moscow pay for the damage it has caused with its military invasion of Ukraine.

The British prime minister also urged the US to continue providing financial and military support to Ukraine. “We should never underestimate what America has done for Ukraine and for Euro-Atlantic security. I urge them to continue their support and I’m sure they will,” notes Sunak.

Yesterday Saturday, the British Ministry of Defense pledged to invest 245 million pounds (287 million euros) in the production of artillery ammunition to strengthen the Ukrainian armed forces.
