The Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko declared that he will be a candidate for the presidency in 2025, Belarusian state news agency BelTA reported today.

“Tell them (the opposition abroad) that I will be a candidate,” Lukashenko told reporters at a polling station after casting his vote in Belarus’ parliamentary and local elections today.

“No one, no responsible president would abandon his people who followed him into battle,” he added.

69-year-old Lukashenko has led Belarus since 1994 and is one of the closest allies of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“We still have a year until the presidential elections. A lot can change, he also noted in response to a journalist’s question after his remarks, according to BelTA.

“Of course I and all of us, society, will react to the changes that will take place in our society and the situation in which we will approach the elections in a year,” concluded Lukashenko.
