The number of prisoners in France surpassed on February 1st any previous record, having reached 76,258. Compared to the previous month, there were 3,964 more, registering an increase of 5.5% on an annual basis, according to data released today by the French Ministry of Justice.

Her February 1st French prisons had a cumulative capacity of 61,737 prisoners, and therefore the occupancy rate was 123.5%.

In particular, in detention centers with convicted felons or pretrial detainees, the occupancy rate was 147.7%.

In some penitentiaries the occupancy even hovered around 200%. Due to overcrowding, 3,059 prisoners were forced to sleep on a mattress on the floor, a number increased by 50.2% compared to last year.

The issue had led last July to a condemnation of France by the European Court of Human Rights. Aiming to decongest prisons, the Macron government plans to increase the capacity of France’s penitentiaries by 15,000 by 2027.
