To the sounds of “My Way” by Frank Sinatrathe coffin with her Alexei Navalny’s body was buried today at the Borisovskoye cemetery in Moscowwhile thousands of people followed the funeral procession on foot from the church of the Icon of the Mother of God in the Mariino neighborhoodwhere the opposition leader lived while he was free.

The soundtrack from the last scene of the film was also played during the burial “Terminator 2“, where Schwarzenegger says the famous line I’ll be back ( “I’ll be back”).

According to his colleagues, “Alexei considered “Terminator 2″ the best film on earth.”

Crowds had gathered at the gates of Borisovskoge Cemetery and were demanding entry to pay their respects, while heavy security forces had been deployed in the area since early morning.

Finally, minutes before the cemetery was to be closed, the authorities allowed his supporters to enter and bid farewell to the opposition leader.

During the funeral service in the church Navalny’s body was put on display with the casket open for his relatives.

His mother, Lyudmilaand his father, AnatolyKthey stood by the coffin, holding candles, as the priest sang the exodus.

Thousands of Russian citizens had gathered since early morning – and despite Moscow’s warnings – around and outside the church to say goodbye to Navalny, with tears in their eyes, throwing flowers and rhythmically chanting his name and slogans such as “no to war” and “we will not forget your death.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov had warned earlier that any unauthorized gatherings in support of the Russian dissident would constitute a violation of the law, adding that he had “nothing to say” to the family of the deceased.

Among those waiting in line to pay their last respects were the ambassadors of France, Germany and the US, as well as three opposition figures who remain at large: Yevgeny Roizman, Boris Nadezdin and Ekaterina Dutsova.
