The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) decided last year to allow the retail sale of mifepristone, for the first time
The two largest US drugstore chains, CVS and Walgreens, will begin selling the abortion pill mifepristone in their stores in several states this month.
The companies announced last year that they intended to make the pill available after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) decided to allow retail sale of mifepristone for the first time. Walgreens is expected to begin selling the drug within the next week, subject to federal and state regulations.
“We will begin to dispose the pill at select locations in New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, California and Illinois“, he said today.
CVS will fill prescriptions for the drug in Massachusetts and Rhode Island within the next few weeks and plans to expand its sale to other states where permitted by law.
US President Joe Biden, in a first reaction, said he “encourages all pharmacies” who want to follow the two chains “to request certification”.
