Humanitarian aid intended for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip will be transported by sea from Cyprus to the enclave within days, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Wednesday.

It is not clear at this stage which country or countries are offering the aid, what its quantity is, where it will be taken, or how it will be distributed. The Reuters source spoke of coordination on the issue with the United Arab Emirates.

“They want the aid to be sent before Ramadan starts” (on Sunday), the source explained, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Aid deliveries to the Gaza Strip are becoming increasingly urgent as the humanitarian devastation in the besieged enclave worsens.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, is expected in Cyprus tonight to discuss the dimensions of the creation of a maritime corridor for the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, the KYPE reported yesterday. He is expected to visit infrastructures that will be used, especially the port of Larnaca.

Cyprus, 370 kilometers northwest of the Gaza Strip, is the closest European Union member state to the Palestinian enclave.
