The president of Turkey announced his retirement from the political scene on Friday Recep Tayyip Erdogan, declaring that the municipal elections scheduled for March 31 will be his last.

These elections are my last, said Mr Tayyip Erdogan in his speech to the representatives of the Turkey Youth Foundation (TUGVA) which is close to the ruling party.

Speaking of municipal elections he stated: “this for me is a final, this election is my last election with the authority given by law. The result will be the transfer of a legacy to my siblings who will follow.”

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with 81 provincial representatives of TÜGVA.

“Erdogan, the most successful politician in modern Turkey, has led the country for more than two decades. Winner of more than a dozen elections since 2002, Erdogan was re-elected in May 2023,” Reuters comments.
