Five migrants drowned trying to reach Europe by boat, the Tunisian National Guard announced yesterday Saturday. The victims were located off the coast of Zarzis, in southeastern Tunisia, where authorities rescued 24 people.

According to the information of the National Guard, the boat on which the irregular immigrants were on board had sailed from the shores of a “neighboring country”, a term that usually refers to Libya.

Tunisia is, along with Libya, a key departure point for thousands of migrants fleeing poverty and conflict in other parts of Africa and the Middle East in the hope of a better life in Europe.

In 2023 the Tunisian coast guard collected the bodies of nearly 1,000 migrants who drowned off its coast, according to Tunisian officials, the highest number in any year.

According to the World Organization for Migration, more than 2,270 people died in 2023 in the central Mediterranean trying to reach Europe irregularly, which is 60% more than the previous year.
