Greek-Turkish: No challenge will go unanswered, Athens’s strict message

by

Athens is closely monitoring the escalation of challenges from the Turkish side, while the 64th round of exploratory talks between Greece and Turkey is imminent next week.

THE government, through the government spokesman, intervened yesterday that he believes in the necessity of bilateral contacts, but observes the escalation on the part of Ankara. “Everything is evaluated,” said Giannis Oikonomou in yesterday’s briefing, adding that all Turkish challenges are met immediately.

Escalating its reaction, Athens proceeded yesterday to protest march to Ankara for the statements of the Turkish officials, who questioned the Greek sovereignty over the Aegean islands, accusations that the Greek side rejects as illegal and non-existent.

The signal for the coordinated challenges of the Turkish side was given on Wednesday at noon by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Shortly afterwards, the Turkish ambassador to Oslo took the baton of challenges when he spoke at a lengthy discussion organized by the Norwegian Institute of International Relations, to which Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias was invited.

The placement of the Turkish ambassador provoked her on the spot reaction of Nikos Dendiaswhile on Thursday morning the Greek side proceeded to protest.

According to diplomatic sources, the Foreign Ministry underlined on the Turkish side the strong dissatisfaction of Greece, as well as its protest against the recent statements of Turkish officials, who questioned the Greek sovereignty over the Aegean islands, accusations which of course the Greek side rejects illegal and non-existent.

It was stressed that these statements are not only counterproductive, but an escalation of Turkish provocative behavior.

The oxymoron of the Turkish positions was further emphasized, as the Turkish side constantly invokes International Law, at the moment when it is blatantly violating it.

In this context, a clear reference was made to the casus belli, to the Turkish-Libyan “memorandum”, to the “Blue Homeland” and so on.

At the same time, according to diplomatic sources, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs gave relevant instructions to our embassies in the Member States of the European Union, NATO and the Members of the UN Security Council to provide relevant information on the escalation of Turkey’s provocative behavior.

Similar information will be provided to the leaderships of the above Organizations.
