“Several motorized infantry units of the Russian armed forces have returned to their bases in Dagestan and Chechnya after the completion of high schools in which they took part in the Crimea,” Interfax news agency reported, citing a statement issued by the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Russia announced this week that it had begun withdrawing troops it had deployed in areas adjacent to Ukraine. Kiev and its allies in the West dispute that some units and equipment are simply being replaced by new ones.
Interfax also reported that a train with tanks left for their base in Nizhny Novgorod, without specifying where exactly.
TASS also reported that some 30 trucks with soldiers and equipment of units of the western military sector are returning to their base, also without specifying where they left.
The West, however, continues to be deeply skeptical of Russia’s intentions to withdraw. “With the unprecedented deployment of troops on the border with Ukraine and demands dating back to the Cold War, Russia is calling into question the fundamental principles of a peaceful European order,” said the German Defense Minister. Analena Berbock in a statement issued, calling on Moscow to make “serious efforts to de-escalate”.
