Mr. Biden, 81, exceeded the required threshold (1,968 delegates at the convention) to mathematically secure the nomination.
US President Joe Biden has secured the required number of delegates at the upcoming Democratic convention to become the party’s presidential nominee in November, according to calculations by US television networks CNN and NBC after the Georgia caucus, something for about which there were not exactly doubts.
Mr. Biden, 81, exceeded the required threshold (1,968 delegates at the convention) to mathematically secure the nomination.
He never faced serious competition in the party and is simply expected to formally receive the anointing at the August congress.
It has long been considered certain that — barring a shocking contingency — he will face off again, as in 2020, with Republican Donald Trump on November 5. The latter’s last challenger in the race for the Republican nomination, Nikki Haley, dropped out last week. All that remains is for the 77-year-old tycoon to secure the required number of delegates at the conference of his own faction to have the nomination mathematically assured (1,215, he has 1,144).
