At least 16 people drownedamong them four children, when an inflatable boat carrying migrants sank off the northwestern Turkish province of Canakkale (Dardanelles), off the Eceabat district, Turkish state-run Anadolu news agency reported today.

Public broadcaster TRT reported that 20 bodies had been recovered. A previous report by the authorities spoke of eight dead.

Provincial Governor Ilhami Aktas told Anadolu that four migrants were rescued early this morning and were taken to the hospital, while search and rescue operations continue, involving ten coast guard vessels, 2 helicopters, the navy, the Turkish Disaster Management Agency (AFAD) and the National Medical Rescue Team (UMKE).

It is not yet clear how many migrants were on board the inflatablethe governor told Anadolu.
