With the Russia-Ukraine war to be in his third year, the EU announced on Friday that it had disbursed half a billion euros to boost ammunition production.

The European Commission announced that the move, taken under the Act in Support of Ammunition Production (ASAP), will allow the European defense industry to increase its ammunition production capacity to 2 million shells per year until the end of 2025.

“The Commission completed the assessment under the ASAP regulation in record time and selected 31 projects to help the European industry increase its ammunition production and readiness.”

“Thanks to the measures already taken, the European annual production capacity for 155 mm projectiles had already reached 1 million per year in January 2024,” it said.

Large quantities of ammunition are used in the ongoing war in Ukraine, and production is not sufficient, the NATO secretary general pointed out on Thursday.

“NATO allies are not providing Ukraine with enough ammunition and this has consequences on the battlefield every day. The fact that the Russians are able to have more weapons than the Ukrainians every day, of course, is a huge challenge, it’s one of the reasons why the Russians have been able to make some progress on the battlefield in recent weeks and months.” said Jens Stoltenberg.

He urged allies to “step up and provide more ammunition to Ukraine.”
