A Palestinian imam opened fire on Saturday in the direction of a Jewish settlement in the occupied West Bank and was subsequently shot and killed by Israeli soldiers there, the Israeli military said.

The man opened fire from the Palestinian cemetery in Hebron to the adjacent Jewish settlement, as reported by Israel’s public broadcaster Kan. It broadcast footage showing a man standing among the graves and firing an automatic rifle. No Israelis have been injured.

There is currently no comment from Palestinian officials.

Violence in the West Bank has increased since the war in Gaza began almost six months ago, leading to an increase in Israeli raids and Palestinian street attacks.

The lack of significant progress in negotiations to reach a ceasefire in Gaza has added to fears that violence in the region will increase further during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan which began this week.

According to the first information, the perpetrator of the attack was Sheikh Mahmoud Nofal, imam of Al-Qassem Mosque in Hebron.
