The Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Jens Stoltenberg, emphasized yesterday Sunday in Baku that it is of great importance to fight climate change “for security reasons”.

He was speaking during a joint press conference with the president of Azerbaijan, Ilam Aliyev, whose country will host COP29 in November.

Excluding the “important role” played by Azerbaijan in supplying gas to “key allies” of NATO, Mr Stoltenberg underlined the need to “reconcile the need for energy with the environment”.

The fight against climate change “is important for security, for NATO,” continued the Norwegian, explaining that global warming is “a crisis multiplier and we see the consequences everywhere in the world.”

The choice of Azerbaijan to host COP29 was strongly criticized by environmentalists. It is part of Baku’s strategy to change the image of the country that pollutes and has a despotic form of government.

“Thanks to our natural resources (…) we invest to a large extent, together with our partners, in renewable energies”, Mr. Aliyev assured for his part.
