Israel carried out new airstrikes in Syria in the early hours of the morning, targeting military installations in the suburbs of the capital Damascus, causing some “material damage”, according to a statement from the Syrian Ministry of Defense.

Arrays of the Syrian air defense intercepted Israeli missiles and “shot down some”, according to the same source.

The Israeli military has launched hundreds of airstrikes in Syria since the country’s highly complex armed conflict erupted in 2011.

Such operations have proliferated since war broke out in the Gaza Strip in October 2023 between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas. Israel is targeting organizations close to Iran, above all the Lebanese Hezbollah, an ally of Hamas, as well as Iranian officers who are in Syrian territory in an advisory capacity.

Israel’s political and military leadership rarely publicly comments on operations in Syria, but has declared that it will not allow Iran, the Jewish state’s sworn enemy, to build a bridgehead or expand its foothold on its border.

A week ago, the Israeli military announced that it had hit “about 4,500” Hezbollah positions in Lebanon and Syria, including “over 1,200” from the air, after the war broke out in the Gaza Strip on October 7.
