After more than five months of conflict, the international community is stepping up efforts to reach a truce in the face of the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza
France announced today that is “currently” working on a draft UN resolution which calls for an “immediate ceasefire” in the Gaza Strip, as well the United States reported a similar scheme for the first time.
“We believe it is time to take new initiatives in the United Nations Security Council for an ongoing conflict”underlined today Christophe Lemoinethe deputy representative of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, recalling the catastrophic humanitarian situation.
After more than five months of conflict, the international community is stepping up efforts to reach a ceasefire in the face of the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, where nearly 32,000 people have lost their lives, according to Hamas, in Israeli bombings which are being carried out after the Islamist movement’s bloody attacks in Israel on October 7.
“France, in this context, assumes its responsibilities and is currently working on a draft decision”he added, clarifying that the head of French diplomacy, Stéphane Cezournet, discussed yesterday, Wednesday, with his counterparts from Algeria, Egypt, Jordan and Palestine “to explore the ways of a resolution calling mainly for an immediate truce.”
The official was unable to specify when this draft could be tabled but, in his opinion, it “could receive the approval of the Security Council” unlike draft resolutions previously tabled by France.
Stéphane Cezournet also met on Monday the representatives of the European members of the Security Council, namely Slovenia and Malta, said Christophe Lemoine.
Asked about coordination with the United States, which announced last night that it had tabled a draft resolution before the Security Council that also calls for an “immediate ceasefire” and the release of hostages, the French foreign ministry spokesman said several resolutions could be tabled .
Furthermore, he dismissed any lack of coordination between the two countries. “Obviously, we have been coordinating with the United States since the beginning of the crisiss,” he said, adding that Washington is “important partner” based in the UN Security Council. “And therefore, there is indeed a dialogue with the US and there has been since the beginning of the crisis”he stated.
