Young people in the US are far more critical of Israel’s handling of the war in the Gaza Strip than the rest of the American population, according to a Pew Research Center poll released Thursday.

Among the 18 to 29-year-old sample, 46% call Israel’s response to the October 7 Hamas attack unacceptable, 21% find it acceptable, while 32% are unsure.

In the portion of the sample in the over 65 age range, the results are roughly the reverse, 29% and 53% respectively.

The poll was conducted on a sample of 12,693 adults between February 13 and 25. The margin of statistical error is ±1.5%.

The war is sparking intense public debate in the US: there is a toss-up about its potential impact on Joe Biden’s re-election campaign in November.

40% of the sample in the Pew Research Center survey said they are not sure if US President Joe Biden has found the right balance in his response to this crisis.

Among those who said they support Democrats, 29% think the president has struck the right balance, but 34% think he provides too much support for Israel.

The president, 81, has often portrayed himself as a supporter of Israel for decades, and has strongly defended its right to respond to an attack by Hamas’ military arm in southern areas of Israeli territory that left 1,160 dead. people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli data.

However, while the Democratic head of state has provided strong military and diplomatic support to Israel, he has also criticized the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the war’s impact on civilians in the Gaza Strip, where the UN warns of widespread famine.

Israeli military operations have so far killed 31,988 people in the Palestinian enclave, the vast majority of them civilians, according to the Hamas Health Ministry.

As for the potential impact of the war in the Gaza Strip on the Nov. 5 presidential election, attention is largely focused on Michigan, a key northern state with a large Muslim and Arab population.

21% of 414 American Muslims polled by the Pew Research Center thought the October 7 attack by Hamas was acceptable, a view shared by just 5% of the general sample.
