UN chief Antonio Guterres will meet humanitarian workers on the “Egyptian side” of the Rafah border today
Its general secretary UN Antonio Guterres is expected today on Egypt’s border with the Gaza Strip, as Israel predicts a ground attack across the border, in Rafah, in the southern part of the Palestinian enclave, even without the support of its American allies.
In the Gaza Strip, fighting continues unabated, mainly around the Al Shifa hospital in Gaza City, in the northern part of the Palestinian enclave, where the Israeli army said it had killed more than 150 Palestinian fighters and arrested hundreds of suspects since the beginning of the week.
Early this morning, the Hamas health ministry in Gaza announced that 67 people had died overnight and last night.
“We can’t take it anymore, I assure you. Drop us a bomb and release us from this life. It’s unfair to God, no human being could endure what is happening to us,” sobbed Turkey Barbah, who lost loved ones in strikes in the southern Gaza Strip. “How long are we going to put up with this? We’re exhausted and we can’t take this life and this huge pressure anymore.”
UN chief Antonio Guterres will meet today with aid workers on the “Egyptian side” of the border with Rafah, the Gaza city that is home to about 1.5 million Palestinians, amid fears the population in the event ground operation there of Israel.
During his visit, the UN Secretary-General is expected to repeat calls for a ceasefire that will allow humanitarian aid to enter the Palestinian enclave after more than five months of war between Israel and Hamas.
Guterres will visit Al Ares in Egypt’s northern Sinai, where most of the international aid to Gaza is delivered and concentrated, as well as the Egyptian side of the Rafah border crossing, which is one of the entry points for aid to the Palestinian pouch.
He is also expected to visit a hospital in Al Ares and meet with UN humanitarian workers in Rafah.
