A plea for calm, following the violent incidents between Kurds and Turks that have erupted in recent days in Belgium, in view of Sunday’s municipal elections in Turkey, the Prime Minister of Belgium, Alexander de Croix, addressed today Wednesday.

In a press conference he gave shortly after the end of the Security Council, the Belgian Prime Minister called on the Turkish and Kurdish communities of Belgium to put an end to the violence that has occurred in the last few days in various municipalities of the country, clarifying that the demonstrations in favor of the PKK will not be accepted.

“Freedom of opinion is guaranteed in Belgium, but expressions in favor of a terrorist organization such as the PKK they will not be tolerated,” the Belgian prime minister warned, adding: “This violence must stop. Calm must return. We must not introduce foreign conflicts into our country.”

Last Monday, a Kurdish demonstration, waving PKK flags, caused incidents in Luxembourg Square, outside the European Parliament in Brussels. Police had to use water cannons to disperse the protesters. Some of them were shouting: “Erdogan is a murderer”. Last Sunday, violence broke out between members of the Turkish community and Kurdish supporters of the PKK in Limburg and Liege, in the eastern part of Belgium.
